Wrap up for 2020
I wrote a series of emails on why and how we need to take our teams Back...to the Future!
The key message centred around the idea of Post-Traumatic Growth. That we can emerge from challenging times different and better as opposed to striving for a return to a way of working that no longer suits the world that we live in.
Rather than linking to each of those posts, it's probably most useful to access this discussion paper that incorporates and extends on them. It will be useful and relevant for many people.
To give you a taste, I have shared the awesome graphic recording from Alan Chen of Sh8peshifters that captures many of the key concepts.
As I was preparing to finalise and send my book off to the printer, I shared five great books on team performance including a short summary of why I love them.
The books are:
Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World (Stanley McChrystal, David Silverman, Tantum Collins and Chris Fussell)
Superteams: The Secrets of Stellar Performance from Seven Legendary Teams (Khoi Tu)
Teaming: How Organizations Learn, Innovate, and Compete in the Knowledge Economy (Amy Edmondson)
Smart Teams: How to work better together (Dermot Crowley)
Read this before our next meeting: How we can get more done (Al Pittimpalli)
By the way, thanks so much to the many readers who have bought and provided feedback on my book, Team Up. If you'd like to know more or to get a copy, head to www.teamupbook.com.au
A ritual for failure in your teams
This post was well received and I think it's predominantly for two reasons:
We are all more likely to fail at the moment given that the world is changing so fast
There is still a stigma attached to failing that means that we don't make the most of it for ourselves or our teams
2021 will bring new ways for all of us to fail (assuming that you are trying to do something meaningful). A way for us to fail productively will continue to be helpful.
I hope that quickly revisiting each of these ideas is helpful for you as we head into 2021.
For this week, my questions are from the Back...to the Future inspired series. They are always useful questions for you to consider with your teams - and especially at the end of the year:
What was? What has worked in the past but is no longer serving us?
What is? What are you learning now that you can continue to apply in the new normal?
What will be? What do you need to be ready for what's next?
I'll be literally packing away my computer for a few weeks to allow myself some space and return full of energy for 2021. I have some really exciting projects that I look forward to sharing with you. Thanks so much for your energy, attention and time in 2020. I'm looking forward to keeping in touch throughout 2021.
